Publication Ethics

The Journal of the Anthropological Society of South Australia (JASSA) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and ethical practice in academic publishing. Our policies follow the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and apply to authors, reviewers, editors, and the publisher alike. We expect all parties to uphold honesty, transparency, and accountability in the publication process.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their submissions are original, properly cited, and acknowledge the contributions of others. Plagiarism in any form is unacceptable. Authorship must be limited to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the research, and all contributors should be credited appropriately. Authors must also ensure the accuracy of data and results, avoiding fabrication, falsification, or selective reporting. Simultaneous submission to multiple journals is strictly prohibited. Research involving human participants, Indigenous knowledge, or cultural heritage must be conducted with respect for communities and traditions, and with all necessary permissions and approvals in place.

Reviewers play a vital role in safeguarding the quality of publications. Manuscripts sent for review are confidential and must not be shared or discussed beyond the review process. Reviews should be objective, constructive, and free from personal criticism of the authors. Reviewers are expected to point out relevant published work that has not been cited and must disclose any conflicts of interest that could influence their judgment. If unable to provide a fair and timely review, reviewers should decline the invitation.

Editors are responsible for making fair and unbiased decisions based solely on the academic merit, originality, and relevance of submitted manuscripts. Considerations of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, or political philosophy of the authors will never play a role in editorial decisions. Editors must maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest by recusing themselves when appropriate. They are also tasked with addressing ethical concerns or errors when identified, by issuing corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern to safeguard the scholarly record.

The publisher of JASSA supports the editorial team in upholding these ethical standards. As a Diamond Open Access journal, JASSA provides free access for readers and imposes no publication or submission fees on authors. Authors retain full copyright under a Creative Commons license, ensuring the widest possible dissemination of research. The publisher is committed to ensuring the long-term preservation of published work and to maintaining the integrity and quality of the journal.
